Rutherford County starts a trend of incorporating the county name into the county seat name. Huh. Anyway Rutherfordton! Long name, I know.

Rutherfordton is the oldest county seat in western NC. Even though it wasn't always Rutherfordton, the town used to be named "Rutherfordtown" but over time it got shortened and the W was taken away.
Rutherfordton is small but pretty and full of history. The town had a mint during the Carolina Gold Rush, when the mint in Philadelphia was too far away. The town also had a small park on main street.
The courthouse was BIG. I got some pictures of some memorials on the lawn, not including a Veterans Memorial, but a firefighters Memorial.

And there was also a big confederate thing.

I also got the courthouse itself. Another one to cross off the list!
