Madison County: Marshall

County Seat population (2016): 889
Downtown Marshall
From one county named after a president to the next, this time it's James Madison, the 4th!

Marshall is a lot smaller (by population) then it looks. Marshall is a small mountain town on the French Broad River. There's also an Island in the middle of the river that you can drive to, where you can get some nice views of the town.
The downtown area has tons of old buildings and small businesses for you to check out. We went to the island to see this farmer's market there, and all the websites we looked at said it was huge. It wasn't.

The courthouse has some memorials on the lawn, one for the famous Civil War general Robert E. Lee.
And some random WWII person.
The courthouse has been there since 1907 and it's STILL BEING USED. It's really pretty, too.
