Mitchell County is a small county (2nd smallest by total area actually) in the west. It's part of what I call "The Small 3" along with Avery and Yancey. Also lots of mountains. Expect no phone service anywhere outside of Spruce Pine or the town I visited, Bakersville.

The old courthouse actually has some importance. Back in 2002, the original jail for the county caught on fire and 8 people died. The area where the old jail was is now a park.

The old courthouse had 2 monuments. Including the usual Veterans Memorial,

 And an older confederate soldier monument.
